Tool Time Tuesday

Rulers and templates.

--Drawing Closed--

How many do you have? I have too many. Yes, I succumb to the latest gadget to make my life easier. But, do I really use them? For the most part, yes, I do.

When I first started quilting, there were no rotary cutters or neato acrylic rulers. We used Pellon and cereal cardboard to make templates. I still have some of them from the very first Log Cabin Quilt (pillow) I made.

I really like the rulers by Creative Grids. They have built in gripper dots, the lines are clear and easy to see. One downside, my quilting studio is so well lit, sometimes I have a bit of overhead glare, but nothing that I can't deal with. My fav ruler right now is the 8-1/2 by 24 inch. I have a 6-1/2 inch square that is totally gridded out with 1/8-inch lines. Love that one. Wish they still made it.

I have an extra Creative Grids 6-1/2 inch square ruler and a Marti Michell Corner Trimmer that I'm going to give away.

The first random winner will get the ruler and the second will get the Corner Trimmer.

Tell me what your favorite ruler/template is and why. Drawing will be held Monday, Nov. 14. Good luck!

  1. I have lots of different brands of templates and rulers but I have to say my go-to templates are the "Easy" ones made by Sharon Hultgren. They don't have too many lines on them - just enough so I can do what I need to do without distraction. My favorite long ruler, though, is my O'Lipfa lip edge ruler - it makes it so easy to cut a straight line because it catches on the edge of my cutting board.

  2. I only have 3 templates total and a cutting mat - I have no idea what brand they are! I use the cutting mat all the time and really need another one (a little bigger than the one I currently have) as the lines are wearing off. I probably use the 6 1/2 long ruler the most.

  4. I don't have either of these rulers. I like my square rulers the best, great for HST and corners of borders.

  6. I'm a chicken quilter, meaning I avoid triangles at all costs. Bawk! bawk! bawk!
My favorite (and only) 'big' ruler is an O'lipfa lip edge. My Fiskars rotary cutter is 15 years old at least, and works as well as it did the first time I used it, many blades ago. I have a 6.5" square template that I rarely use, as well as a 1"x6" acrylic ruler.
I came to you from Sarah's blog, too. Happy quilting!

  9. I use my CG 6.5x18 inch ruler the most but I also love my QID hst square up ruler b/c I can trim the hst's before I open them up - trimming 2 sides is always better that trimming 4 sides.

  14. HI Pam -- I'm a fairly new blogger myself and found your blog through the Fabric Addict blog. Mine is quiltingunderthesun.blogspot.com. I have been quilting for about 10 years, and my favorite ruler is the 6" x 12" ruler. I have an Olfa, but I love the Creative Grid rulers too! Love the design of your blog. Keep on going!

  17. My fav would be the 5" wide by 24 long. It has a lip to hold it against the cutting mat, and keep it at the 90 degree position. Love it! Lots of my "make your own designs" start with the 5" square so I get to use that ruler. Thanks for asking. Hope you have a very successful blog experience.
    Hugs!

  19. So glad I found your blog! I am nearly done with the same Terrain quilt and I might be using the same border fabric - I just LOVE it!
As for templates, I don't have any and my most used ruler is probably my 12.5 x 12.5. The only other one I really use is 6.5 x 24!
I look forward to following your blog!
